The TV anti-hero - Loving the bad guy / gal

I’ve recently been catching up with Sons of Anarchy. The series follows a biker gang SAMCRO (Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original) and their struggles with various other less than savory characters in the town of Charming, California. The thing about a show like Sons of Anarchy is the ‘heros’ of the piece are actually pretty ruthless and scummy, still that doesn’t stop us from enjoying them and even rooting for them.

This got me thinking about other TV anti-heros and there are quite a few. A few that sprang to my mind immediately were Donald Draper from Mad Men and Tony Soprano from The Sopranos. A lot of women love these guys and they’re the epitome of a cheating, lying lowlife with no respect for women. Interesting then that so many people find them so attractive. Admiral Helena Cain from the Battlestar Galactica universe also fits the mold, as a cool anti-hero, she’s a bad ass with few scruples, but still you kind of like her for her badass ways.
