The L Word finale a short retrospective complaint

 The L Word Finale Flop

So who else watched the finale of lesbian TV extravaganza The L Word this week (well the weekend in the US). I just got through watching it and it has to be said it was pretty much a disaster from beginning to end. There were loads of complaints I personally had about the episode - and indeed this whole season - but these were best said by AfterEllen editor Sarah Warn when she stated:

“This structural collapse was glaringly evident almost from the beginning of the episode. Extreme closeups and odd camera angles were employed. Characters disappeared (Kelly was saved by a bell somewhere) or randomly appeared (Jodie thanked Bette and Tina for letting her be a part of their lives). Others delivered rambling monologues that were so poorly written you couldn’t even follow them (Alice talking about Tasha and Jamie on the phone, Molly thanking Shane).”

Warn adds: “Nonsensical plot contrivances were introduced”. Yes they were and by the bucketload, Warn then states “False drama was created (Dylan and Helena suddenly breaking up over trust issues)”. The entire episode felt ridiculous.

A lesbian series that by its very nature was groundbreaking has gone out a whimpering mess. One does wonder what on earth the writing staff were thinking. The series has suffered a few dismal seasons, but one had hoped the series finale would at least see it off in style. Instead what we got was an episode that was not only structurally poor, it also pandered to the anti-lesbian stereotype - predatory, murderous, conniving, unhappy - that so many straight written drama pieces do. Illene Chaiken should be proud she got the series to screens in the first place and thoroughly embarrassed by what she let it become.

  • What do expect from such a low class idea of a production? There might be love between 2 women but there is no reason to transform love into sexual acts. Love is so much greater than what these petty authors tried to put on screen. It is only another example of how ignorant writers become when they only have the media as a guiding light. Reach inside if you want something real and throw away your television and build up your soulvision.
