In the UK “The Hour” – a new series from BBC2 – is being touted as ‘the UK’s answer to “Mad Men”‘, but I think such sentiment does the show a disservice, somehow suggesting it has lifted from that show. “The Hour” centres on a newsroom in the 1950′s, there’s gender politics, conspiracy theory and a fantastic cast.
“The Hour” does almost everything right, though its at times snails pace speed isn’t going to appeal to everyone. The story is knitted together nicely and I personally thought the pacing was spot on for something that would take its time to be revealed. Stand out performances by Den Wishaw and Romola Garai deserve a mention, as does the set design and overall look of the show. This is some classy stuff and whilst not likely to get the same attention of that ‘other show’, this one definitely deserves a viewing. “The Hour” looks set to be something quite special, well done BBC2, well done.
