It seems to be all the rage lately, if it isn’t a cop show it’s a cop related show with a vampire / immortal playing lead or second fiddle to some other sort of detective. That’s fine, I like my share of vamp, or in this case immortals by other means, so when I read about New Amsterdam I sort of thought “I’ll give it a watch”.
New Amsterdam is about John Amsterdam, an immortal homicide detective. Unlike shows such as Blood Ties and Moonlight, John Amsterdam is immortal due to a Native American spell, cast upon him by a Native American girl he saves back in 1642. No vamps in sight.
There’s a catch, a prophecy actually, that John will only remain immortal until he finds true love, he will then become mortal again. Of course the show features a love interest and he also has a female partner, so it will be interesting to see what direction it takes. As if all that angst isn’t enough, Amsterdam is also an alcoholic, though he’s been sober since 1965.
