Maid in Manhattan for TV

If you’re a sucker for romantic comedies or for Jennifer Lopez, you probably remember the 2002 movie Maid in Manhattan fondly. It was a fairly amusing, yet predictable vehicle for Lopez that did not too badly at the box office. Now it seems that Lopez loves the idea so much, she’s executive producing a small screen version of the story along with Joe Roth and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
The show will stay true to the screen incarnation by focusing on a young Latina from the Bronx who works at a posh Manhattan hotel, but it will centre more on her peer relationships with other workers than her personal life.
It isn’t the first time that ABC have tried to turn this story into a series. Way back in 2004-05, they worked with a writer to try and get it up and running, but never managed to. Clearly they think that there’s a story waiting to be told, but it does seem a little to easy to just adapt movies or create spin-offs these days. Maybe it’ll be a success, probably depends on who they get in the lead role. My vote goes for Sarah Shahi, she could do the Latina from the Bronx well and inject some comedy in there.
