Mad Men creator says the end is nigh

Okay, that’s not quite true, but Matthew Weiner, the creator of Mad Men has stated that he’d like to set an end date for the series. Before you all start crying and panicking that it’s sometime soon, it’s not. He has reportedly suggested that he’d like the show to end in 2012, so still another couple of years left in it yet.
The biggest problem with this date is that the show’s network AMC has refuted any speculation about the show having an end date yet and clearly wants it to continue on as long as it’s making money. The thing is, I can’t imagine Don Draper in the 80′s as an old man in the advertising business, can you? Sure, it might be interesting, but the whole show is about how different things were back in the 50′s and 60′s, by the time the 80′s rolled around, most viewers would have switched off.
Weiner is still set on knowing when the show is likely to end though. No doubt he’ll be persuaded numerous times by the AMC network to stay “just a little bit longer”. Here’s hoping they know when to call it a day though and don’t ruin the show by holding out a few seasons too long (X-Files anyone?)

It’s still a source of sadness for me that the X-Files is trhe measure of a show that just didn’t know when to frakking stop… I quite agree, of course, but I always feel that that perception overshadows how amazing it was in the earlier seasons…

Hey,
I didn’t mean it to sound like I was putting down The X-Files in the original post. I LOVED The X-Files, but yeah, I guess it is one of the shows we use in that way, because it just went on way too long.
The early seasons were fantastic and I would never want to take that away from it.
Thanks for the comment.
