Jersey Shore upsets U.S. Italian community

jersey shore italian reality TV MTV UNICO

MTV reality series Jersey Shore hasn’t even aired yet and it’s already stirring up trouble. The show is said [according to promo] to depict “guidos” who “keep their hair high, muscles juiced and their fists pumping all Summer long”. Needless to say the Italian-American group UNICO are a tad upset stating the program is “alarming in that it attempts to make a direct connection between “guido culture” and Italian-American identity.

UNICO National President Andre DiMino has called the show offensive and wants MTV to cancel the show before it airs on December 3. Let’s face it, most reality shows these days do this exact same thing. They’re all overly theatrical and they find the biggest ‘characters’ to play in them. It’s getting to the stage where they need not even be termed ‘reality’ TV anymore. You can check out the over the top “guidos” December 3, just don’t assume this is a snapshot of life as an Italian-American any more than Kath & Kim is a snapshot of life of your average American or Australian.
