Chris Rock is doing another special for HBO. Rock’s fifth stand up special will debut 27 September on HBO and is titled Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger. When I heard this news I was a bit ‘Meh’. I realize Chris Rock has a lot of fans in TV land, but to be honest I find his sneaky reverse racism a bit much to stomach, to me, he’s just not funny. A good comedian is someone that takes real life issues and gets you thinking about them in an informed but comedic manner (take Ricky Gervais for example), not someone who is crass for the sake of it and uses racism consistently throughout as their main comedy slant.
Sure I know you can do offensive and comedic all at once, plenty of good comedians do it and do it well, Rock however – in my opinion – just isn’t one of them. Saying that plenty of people think this guy is hilarious given he has the British record for largest stand up audience ever.

You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about but it’s o.k.
Danny it’s an ‘opinion’.
Ricky Gervais???!!!! I’d rather get a sulpuric acid and chlorine enema than listening to him for 5 seconds. How dare you compare him to Chris. Get a life!!
“Anytime we talk about our condition, history, or existance, they callin it reverse racism” Nas – “Nigger”
If you find the comments of Chris Rock or any other black comedian, rapper, or activist for that matter to be too “offensive” to stomach then chances are you are probably part of the problem. The only ones who should be offended are the oppressed (mostly minorities), not the ones who are living comfortably in suburbia and would rather ignore the problem than help solve it! Sorry Miss Angela, whoever it is you are, but racism does still very much exist and not speaking on the topic will only get us much of the same. And as far as Chris Rock not being funny, you must have no sense of humor what so ever. He is easily one of, if not the best stand-up comedian of our time!
I do wonder do you find feminists annoying? How about gays? How about any other minority when they bang on about things?
I am aware racism exists, however sometimes the way one speaks on the topic will either help or hinder the problem, it cannot be all one way. Me having an ‘opinion’ about a certain comedian isn’t going to bring the world to its knees. I also don’t like Benny Hill or Tommy Cooper, yet love Lenny Henry so how does that work? This is about the messages conveyed within the content of the ‘comedic’ message, not about anything else.
Anyone who has studied racism, criminology, sociology KNOWS certain messages affect not only the passive audience, but also the minority being addressed within the message and that is something we all need to consider.
But what do I know, because I don’t like EVERY comedian under the sun, I clearly have no sense of humor, just a sense of choice.
Ricky Gervais!? LOL. Chris Rock is one of the best stand-up comedians of our generation. Putting him and Ricky Gervais in the same sentence would make any sensible person who knows comedy ill.
What stand ups have you been watching? Chris Rock ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS takes real world issues/events and brought truth to them in comedic manners from race, gender, relationships, etc.
You have no clue what you are talking about. I bet you haven’t even seen any of Chris Rock’s stand-ups because then you would realize and ignorance you are showing in your article.
he made it seem that black women aint shit compare to a white woman. way would u put ur on color down like that. i was a big chris rock fan b4 this special.
He just made them look aggressive but not at all in a condescending way. Maybe you missed the part when he said, don’t get me wrong a black women can run for president. idiot
i just watch it in my state -israel , and he is a GENIUS !!!!!
Gotta love people who can’t handle other people having an opinion.
As for my opinion, I agree, in that I have a very ‘meh’ feeling towards Chris Rock. He can be funny at times, but he’s often obnoxious and abrasive without a certain level of intellectual depth or irony or anything else behind it.
He’s not nearly as bad, in that regard, as, say, Carlos Mencia, but he’s by no means the best stand-up of all time. MAYBE top 50, I’ll give you, and what position therein is entirely up to personal taste. But I doubt anyone who’d put him in the top 5 or 10 doesn’t really have that much experience with the breadth and depth of the comedy world.
For my money, Bill Hicks and George Carlin where the greatest, bar none. And comics like Bill Bailley, Patton Oswalt, and Dylan Moran are far worthier of praise than Rock.
I have been a fan of Chris Rock for some time.
I am was raised in Bed-Stuy so I know we had similiar childhoods for different reasons. Still, the latest HBO special was hardly vintage. It seemed the cameras were trained on a few laughing idiots. He was not as funny as in the past.I cringed at the jokes about the N word as well as the way he played into every sterotype.Way past his prime and even his movies are off. I wish he would have have been funnier.
Correction: I meant I was raised.
