Period drama series “Downton Abbey” was massive in the UK, mainly because it was very, very good. The Network 7 in Australian nabbed the series, despite it seemingly being more suited to something like the ABC. Seems like 7 made the right move given the amazing ratings, that came in at around a staggering 1.8 million, not too shabby huh.
The first episode of “Downton Abbey” smashed it with those ratings, coming in as the highest rated drama series launch since “Packed to the Rafters” back in 2008 (wow that long ago, gees). Maybe the networks will now start to look at the quality UK drama series Aussie viewers generally miss out on. Wonder if the remade “Upstairs Downstairs” will get a commercial network pickup, or any of the other top notch UK series Aussies presently miss.
