American Idol judge Paula and her ‘Niche’

Paula Abdul’s Nitch

Argggh, is it just me or does it drive you crazy too when American Idol host Paula Abdul constantly pronounces the word ‘niche’ wrong. Paula, there is NO t in the word ‘niche’. It isn’t ‘nitch’, it is ‘niche’, please someone on the show tell her that she’s saying it wrong every single time.

Now, perhaps this is how ALL Americans pronounce it, or maybe it’s just Paula in her ‘I am so crazy I can say anything I like’ way that pronounces it wrong. Simon Cowell is English for goodness sake, surely he can nudge her and tell her she’s saying it wrong.

Anyway, aside from that, what the heck was going on with Paula and Simon this week on the girls show in Idol? The two of them were acting like high school kids, messing around, giggling and clearly chatting to someone in the audience. Has it all become too much?… Guess we’ll see this week with more losers leaving.

  • The pronunciation of niche in America rhymes with “ditch.”

Paula Abdul’s pronunciation, at least in America, is correct.

Please see: “The Big Book of Beastly Mispronunciations,” by Charles Harrington Elster; “The NBC Handbook of Pronunciation,” by Eugene Ehrlich; or almost any American dictionary.

“Niche,” in America, has long been anglicized to rhyme with “ditch.”

  • Hey Donald,
thank you so much for taking the time to clear this up. I have a couple of American friends, both of which assured me they said “neesh”, so I was baffled by Paula Abdul saying “Nitch”.

Perhaps I also went with the idea Paula is a little slow on the uptake. ;o) I guess she’s not as silly as I thought, so thanks to you I will watch with fresh eyes and not cringe so much when she says “Nitch”.

  • I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one that’s being driven absolutely crazy by Paula and her ‘nitch’! And the damn woman insists on using the word 5 times every show: I’m beginning to suspect she’s doing it just to annoy me. The bitch - or, rather, the ‘biche’!

  • haha i’m with you on this, it’s like fingernails on a blackboard for me whenever she says it. i agree with halfnice, she’s doing it to annoy us.

  • I thought I was the only one. As for American pronunciation, I know lots of Americans who pronounce it at it is supposed to be pronounced, ‘neesh’. It is from french is it not?

Anyway, that aside, Paula Abdul is an inarticulate, insignifacance on the show. She never has anything of interest or of any real help to the contestants to say except ‘You look beautiful’ or as the movie Meet The Spartans (rubbish) parodied her, ‘You moved me’. Wow, so insightful.

As for Randy ‘You feelin’ me-check it out dawg-good lookin out’ Jackson, I don’t know what to say… Except why???? But at least he seems to know what he’s talking about, which puts him miles in front of the poison monosyllabic dwarf.

Cowell is just playing the nasty man. He enjoys it and it gets him the attention he so obviously craves. And America falls for it, hook, line and sinker.

  • Paula scored in the 1500’s on her SAT’s which are the college tests in America. 1600 is a perfect score. I don’t think she the stupid one here.
