Allison Mack to leave Smallville?

Looks like there are more cast cuts over at the Smallville set. After the recent loss of Lex Luthor and Lana Lang as regular cast members, it seems that fan favorite Chloe Sullivan may also be heading out the door.
TV Guide are reporting that Allison Mack is currently in negotiations for a new contract and of course we all know what that can mean. There’s nothing definite on whether she’ll be returning yet or heading off to new pastures.
With Lex and Lana focusing on other things, is Smallville coming to an end? As it enters its 8th season, it may only be a matter of time before fans start to jump ship along with the regular cast members. If any of you remember the X-Files in its prime, this sounds very similar. The loss of regular cast members can leave a show floundering and maybe even Superman himself can’t save this one.
On a side note I was listening to a radio interview with Nicki Clyne recently (Cally in Battlestar Galactica) and she let slip her, Allison Mack (Chloe in Smallville) and Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang in Smallville) have all gone into buisness together, so one can’t help but wonder if this possible departure has something to do with that.

Smallville is suffering sagging ratings, Michael Rosenbaum will not be returning in season 8, and now TV guide is reporting that Allison Mack, who portrays Chloe Sullivan, maybe leaving over contract negotiations. Chloe Sullivan is Clark Kent’s long time confidant, popular know it all can do anything heroin, and one of only a handful of characters who knows Clarks super secret identity.
Smallville may need to hold on to Allison, but only because the writers or producers seem stuck in the past. For years now Smallville has retreated again and again to storylines about meteor freaks (humans mutated by Kryptonite) and the tired moral message that keeping secrets is bad (sometimes secrets save us).

If they end up axing the character, either because they don’t pay her enough, its almost definite that the show will become a bomb. No offense to the ever increasingly short list of regular cast members, but without Miss Mack its not Smallville. I do understand that all the characters would like to move on and do other projects, but it would be nice to have her back for the final season. I wont be drawn to the show the same anymore though, because none of the characters except Tom Welling are from the original season, which is a downer. So after all that work, theres just nothing left to try to watch.
