WonderCon: Star Trek Panel

Zachary Quinto hanging out with the friendly and helpful Leonard Nimoy.
AICN has a rundown of the “Star Trek” panel at WonderCon, including a shot by shot breakdown of a new trailer. Of course, the real thing will come with “Watchmen” on Friday, so feel free to wait for that.
Of more interest was the panel, which was made up of JJ Abrams, producer Bryan Burke, writer/producer Roberto Orci, and actors Zachary Quinto (Spock), Chris Pine (Kirk), and Zoe Saldana (Uhura). Here are a few highlights:
- Abrams was questioned about a comment he made about this Trek being for new fans, not old ones and Abrams was quick to clarify his statement saying that he doesn’t feel the two are mutually exclusive. You can bring in new Trek fans while appeasing the die hards of the original series.
- In terms of canon, Abrams said that this film adheres to canon just as well as the original series did… that there might be some rule bending here or there, but no more so than what you find in the original series.
- Quinto said the most rewarding part of the experience was getting to know Leonard Nimoy and when asked if he studied up on the original series when he got the part, he said that he didn’t, instead pulling his inspiration directly from working closely with Nimoy. He did, however, constantly run the original series while shooting, saying an episode was always on in his trailer.
How cool is Leonard Nimoy? I bet he’d be a really interesting guy to hang out with. Anyway, read the rest of the report here. This is one of the summer movies that I’m most interested in. My parents are so into it, perhaps way too into it. Every time they go to a movie and see the trailer they call and tell me how excited they are. I think this means we’re all big nerds.
