Winding Rhodes: Terrence Howard Puzzled Over Iron Man 2 Ouster

Well, looks like we won’t be seeing this cast together again.

We got news last week that Terrence Howard had been cut from Iron Man 2, with Don Cheadle stepping into Howard’s role of Jim Rhodes. The reasons given were the rather vague “financial issues” but that’s not what Howard’s heard. In an interview with NPR this weekend, while promoting his new album Shine Through It, Howard said:

“It was the surprise of a lifetime,” he said. “There was no explanation. [The contract] just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren’t kept, and good faith negotiations aren’t always held up.”

If you want to investigate the man’s tone yourself, listen to the NPR interview here; listen for the Iron Man 2 discussion around the four and a half minute mark.

Who’s telling the truth here? What’s the real issue? There’s something weird, because when a movie is as successful as Iron Man was, the last thing a production team would want to do is make any changes. So is it that Howard was angling for a pay raise and is just trying to come off as the innocent here? Or is he telling the truth now and the studio has some weird issue that they’re not discussing. Hopefully more info will come out.
