There we all are feeling sorry for Joss Whedon as his baby gets taken away from him, and yet it appears he was actually approached first to take charge of the Buffy The Vampire movie reboot. Well I’ll be damned.
Warner Bros. recently announced plans to reboot the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series as a movie completely distanced from the TV series Joss Whedon gave to the world. With Whedon not being involved, the Web went mad at WB, claiming this move was way beyond the pale. And Whedon didn’t seem too happy either.
However, it’s now been discovered that Whedon was actually asked whether he wanted to be involved at an early stage. The Hollywood Reporter claims Whedon turned down the chance in order to concentrate on The Avengers. And this PopWatch link from June 2009 suggests there is some truth to this.
Whedon is/was obviously entitled to pass on this reboot, especially if he believes the character should be left well alone. But this revelation does make me wonder what all the fuss was about. Warner Bros. owns the rights and they can do what they want with it. And anyone who doesn’t like the new movie can avoid seeing it. Simple.

First you say Joss Wedon was approached to “take charge” of the ramake. Then you say he was offered the opportunity to “be involved” in the remake.
Fact: Joss was offered the opportunity to “be involved” over a year ago. It’s old news to anyone who has been following this story.
Fact: Joss was NEVER offered the opportunity to “take charge” of the remake. There are at least 4 groups now identified as producers of the remake. They will end up fighting with each other over who is in charge.
Fact: Joss was “involved” in the 1992 movie which was prooduced by one of the same groups that wants to do the remake. They bought his script then restructured the story to their own liking until he walked off the set in frustration. The movie bombed. Joss was the producer of the TV series. Big success. Get It?
