We have casting news from ComingSoon–reportedly Wes Bentley and Brit Marling have joined the cast of “The Green Blade Rises,” a movie to be directed by AJ Edwards, who also wrote the screenplay. Terrence Malick is one of the producers.
“The Green Blade Rises” is a movie about the early years of Abraham Lincoln, or as they describe it:
“…the untold story of the youth of America’s greatest hero. It chronicles the hardships that shaped him, including abandonment by his father in the harsh winter wilderness, the tragedy that marked him forever and the two women who guided him to immortality, putting him on the path to becoming one of the most influential Presidents in United States history.”
So…no mention of zombies, vampires, swamp monsters, devils, or archvillains. It sounds like a fairly straightforward account of young Abe’s life. I’m sure there must be an explanation for the title, but I’m just not sure what it is. Cheers to the ComingSoon commenter Aidan who wrote: “I’m glad they’re completing the trilogy. I really enjoyed Lincoln Begins and The Green Blade.”
Oh, back to the casting–Bentley will play Lincoln’s first schoolteacher and Marling will play Lincoln’s mother, who died when he was a young boy. Diane Kruger is set to play his stepmother and Jason Clarke will play his father.
Lincoln is so far and away the most filmed president, it’s hard to even think of who comes in second. Wait, I just looked it up–according to a Yahoo article from 2008, Lincoln has appeared in 106 movies–add in this year’s “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter” and Spielberg’s “Lincoln” and we’re up to 108. That’s more than double the second place president, George Washington, with 51 movie appearances–yet I don’t think there’s even one straight up Washington biopic. And now Lincoln adds one more with this Green Blade-ness. Wow. Stovetop hats off to you, Mr. Lincoln.
