“Unstoppable” Really Is

Denzel Washington can’t be stopped…from making Unstoppable!
A few weeks ago, “Unstoppable,” a film to star Denzel Washington with Tony Scott directing was put on hold after Washington and Scott refused to take pay cuts. This caused much angst and anguish in Hollywood–were we entering a new period of austerity? Were big movies with big movie stars no longer affordable? Was this project going to resurface with one of the kids from the “Final Destination” series starring and a reality show director in charge? Good heavens, people, was stardom over?!!!
No, we’re not there yet. Variety reports today that the project is back on, with both Washington and Scott in the fold. Apparently the big names and Fox got together and came to some sort of agreement (though Variety doesn’t say what) that is putting the picture back on track.
Get it? “On track?” Ha ha!! Oh, let me explain–here’s the plot of “Unstoppable”:
Washington has been attached since April to re-team with Scott and play a veteran engineer who jumps into a locomotive with a young conductor (”Star Trek’s” Chris Pine) to stop an unmanned runaway train loaded with toxic cargo that is going fast enough to derail when the train reaches a hairpin turn. The resulting spill will destroy a nearby town. The Mark Bomback script is based on true events.
Really? True events? How did I miss this one? Apparently the project has been in development for a number of years, though, so perhaps I was living undercover in Uruguay or something. The good news is that the lengthy development process has allowed the lovely Mr. Pine to get involved. Now that’s good news.
Welcome back, stars, big names, big money and Hollywood!
