Universal Will Help You Get Divorced By 30

Marry a Millionaire

We’ve gone from How to Marry a Millionaire in 1953 to How to Get Divorced by 30 in 2008. The ideal plan should be How to Marry a Millionaire and Get Divorced by 30 with a Favorable Settlement.

Hey, you over there, working on your novel, hoping it’s going to be bought and turned into a screenplay. Stop right now and right a magazine article about relationships. After comic book series, they seem to be the big Hollywood magnet of the moment.

Hot on the heels of Warner Brothers/Maguire Entertainment’s acquisition of Lori Gottlieb’s Atlantic Monthly article, “Marry Him! The Case for Mr. Good Enough,” comes word from Variety that Universal has bought LA Weekly magazine cover article, “How to Get Divorced by 30,” by Sascha Rothchild.

The article, based on the experiences of Rothchild and several friends, proposes the idea that first marriages should be used as training wheels, where you learn how to be married and work out all your problems before finding your true “soul mate.” Fifteen steps are given for how to end your first marriage. No word on whether you’re supposed to inform your starter husband/wife before you get married that he/she is being used for your apprenticeship.

Marc Platt will produce the picture with Dana Fox, who wrote the upcoming Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz starrer “What Happens in Vegas … and 2005′s The Wedding Date. A writer hasn’t been named yet.

Excuse me, I have to go write my “Why It’s Great To Get Fired” article now (Hollywood, are you listening?).
