A movie version of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune has been rumored since the game was released on PS3 a few years ago. It was finally confirmed last June, but details are still a little thin on the ground.
It was rumored last November that Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer were writing the script. Which made perfect sense as this is the writing duo behind Sahara, a film which has a lot in common with the Uncharted game.
That has now been confirmed, and talk has moved to who will helm. According to inside sources talking to The L.A. Times, producers are now talking to a shortlist of directors, with David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) appearing to be the current front-runner.
Sony was thought to be eyeing a summer 2011 release for the film, but 2012 is now looking more likely. Which suits me as I’d rather proper care and attention was taken over this movie to avoid it becoming another crappy game adaptation.
Once the director is in place then the question will turn as to who will star as Nathan Drake. My money is still on Matthew McConaughey, although Hugh Jackman would also be a strong choice.
