‘Transformers 3’ Coming in 2011… Or 2012… Possibly… Maybe

We’re now three months from the second Transformers movie, Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen, hitting cinemas everywhere. And believe it or not, the third movie is already being planned. Variety broke the news yesterday that Transformers 3, or whatever it ends up being called, was set to be released July, 2011.
The story went that the early announcement was just in order to claim the release date first before anyone else got in there. Michael Bay hasn’t yet signed up, and neither have Shia LaBeouf or Megan Fox. And there’s no clues as to the storyline, which is hardly surprising as none of us know yet how the second movie concludes.
However, the story changed today, and I have to thank my co-blogger Kirsten for directing me to the update. According to ComingSoon, booking the release date isn’t confirmation there will be a third film (no, of course not), but more telling was what Michael Bay had to say about it all:
“I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 - they asked me on the phone - I said yes to July 4 - but for 2012 - whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots.”
So, let’s be clear on this so there isn’t any confusion. Transformers 3 may or may not be happening. If it does, it’ll either appear in July, 2011, or July, 2012. And Michael Bay has said yes to doing the non-existent film but hasn’t yet signed on the dotted line. Simple.
I have no doubt there will be a third Transformers movie. The franchise is worth too much for the studios to give up on it after just two films. I would assume that execs have seen the finished cut of Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen and are sufficiently pleased that they want a third. Book your seats now.
