More musical news! The Hollywood Reporter says that Tracy Ullman is in talks to join the cast of “Into the Woods,” Rob Marshall’s film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim stage musical. Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Emily Blunt are all said to be close to making deals to star in the film.
“Into the Woods” is a dark take on classic fairy tales. It focuses on the Baker and his Wife, cursed with childlessness, who venture into the woods to find the witch who put the curse on them. Along the way, they run into many familiar fairy tale characters. Streep would play the witch, Depp would play the Big Bad Wolf, Pine and Gyllenhaal would play two self-satisfied Prince Charmings, and Blunt would play the Baker’s Wife. Ullman would play Jack the Giant Killer’s mother.
If she accepts, this would be (I am wearing out the word “would” in this post) Ullman’s first film since 2007, when she was the forgettable “I Could Never Be Your Woman” with Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer. Ullman has always focused more on TV. She can sing, though–she made her name early in her career with the novelty pop song “They Don’t Know” and also starred as Princess Winifred in a TV version of the musical “Once Upon a Mattress.”
“Into the Woods” is set to begin shooting in late summer/early fall. We’ll see if everyone who has been “in talks” forever gets their deal done.
