‘Totally Spies!’ Getting Big Screen Treatment

Totally Spies! is a French animated kids show I’d never heard of until today. After five seasons of the TV show, it is now being turned in to a full-length 90 minute long movie by Marathon Media and Studio 37.

There’s clearly an audience there for the film as the television series is aired in more than 40 countries, and it is ranked as one of the top five highest-rated children’s shows in the world.

The show focusses on three kids from Beverly Hills, USA, Sam, Alex and Clover who secretly fight international crime. A totally believable plot then. They are supplied with special gadgets for their missions by Jerry, the founder and leader of the secret World Organization of Human Protection agency. It sounds like a Charlie’s Angels rip-off to me!

Marathon Media CEO David Michel told Digital Spy:

“It’s Clueless meets James Bond. We didn’t want to just make a long episode of the series. Our job is to make a good film for fans and also show parents they won’t be bored.”

The film has a $12 million budget and is set to be released some time in the summer of 2009. I’d like to say I’m bothered but I’m really not. I’m sure the show is good and all, but this would be like having a movie made of Inspector Gadget, my childhood cartoon love. Oh hang on a minute, they did make that in to a film. And it was crap. And starred Matthew Broderick. Damn.
