Tommy Lee Jones shall return...as General MacArthur.
Some actors are just naturally born to certain types of roles. For Tommy Lee Jones, those roles are tough, craggy military men. Like World War II leader General Douglas MacArthur.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jones has signed on to play MacArthur in “Emperor,” film set in Japan immediately following World War II. Matthew Fox stars as General Bonner Fellers, a member of MacArthur’s staff who must decide whether Japanese Emperor Hirohito should be tried and executed as a war criminal. In the obligatory love story, Feller also tries to find the Japanese exchange student he fell in love with years ago. (“Yes, Emperor, you will be hanged as a war criminal unless–well, there’s this girl, if you can find her then maybe you can stay in that Emperor chair…).
MacArthur had a checkered career, with some big successes mixed in with big failures. His leadership of occupied Japan after World War II, though, was probably his greatest achievement, as he worked to help the nation rebuild. Jones will be fine in the role.
Jones was last seen in “Captain America: The First Avenger” and will have a big year in 2012. He has “Men in Black III,” “Great Hope Springs,” and “Lincoln” all coming out this year. 2012, the year of Tommy Lee Jones.
