Classic lit adaptation casting news! Deadline tells us that Tom Sturridge has joined the cast of “Far From the Madding Crowd,” the adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s pastoral tragedy novel. Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts are already set to play the other two leads. Thomas Vinterberg, making his English language debut, will direct.
“Far From the Madding Crowd” is set in rural 19th century Britain, and focuses on a beautiful young girl and the three men who love her. That means we have one more man who loves her left to cast. I think I’ve detailed my bad relationship with Hardy’s novels before–basically it started off good, then all of a sudden I turned on his work with the kind of revulsion that can suddenly come over you with certain foods. That happened right before I got to “Far From the Madding Crowd,” which is why I haven’t gotten to it yet, or possibly ever.
Sturridge just came off a run on Broadway in “Orphans,” which got him a Tony nomination. On screen, he has “Effie Gray” and “Untitled Terrence Malick Project” (the one with Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, and Natalie Portman) ready to go. He’s getting ready to star in “Sils Maria” with Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloe Moretz.
