Tom Hardy: Batman friend or foe?
Earlier this year I told a friend that there was a lot of speculation that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be in the next Batman movie because Christopher Nolan liked to work with the same people. My friend said, “Who? Who has he worked with a lot? Who’s been in most of his movies? And people reprising roles from “Batman Begins” in “The Dark Knight” don’t count.” I stammered a bit and finally came up with, “…umm, Michael Caine?”
Well, well, well, don’t I look smart now? According to Deadline, Tom Hardy, who was in Nolan’s “Inception,” will be in the cast of Nolan’s next Batman movie. There! A repeat casting that is not a reprise of a role!
Hardy will reportedly have a “lead” role (though not Batman!), but no one will say what it is or whether he will be a good guy or bad guy. While he’s not ready for the retirement home, Hardy is, luckily, too old for Robin speculation. I say luckily because Robin fans aren’t easily satisfied and will find fault with any portrayal of him onscreen, I bet. They’re very protective.
So we don’t know. What we do know about Hardy: he’s in the upcoming adaptation of John Le Carre’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” and is also in the Reese Witherspoon-Chris Pine comedy “This Means War.” Hardy is also set to be in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” but that’s been put on hold, so he’ll swing back into that whenever it’s ready. I’m sure he won’t let that get in the way of “Batman.”
