Tom Cruise Offered ‘Top Gun 2’?

Please, say it ain’t so. Studio bosses are apparently looking to make a sequel to the atrocious 80s movie, Top Gun. Which is bad enough in its own right. But, to make matters about ten times worse, they want Scientology’s pin-up boy, Tom Cruise, to reprise his role as Maverick.

This is purely a rumour at this stage, with The Sun newspaper, hardly what I’d deem to be the most trustworthy source in the world, claiming it as fact. An outline of a script has reportedly already been written, but unless Cruise agrees to play some part in the film, that’s as far as it will go.

The idea for revisiting Top Gun is thought to have stemmed from the current trend for bringing back tired old franchise for one more outing. Some, such as Indiana Jones and The Temple Of The Crystal Skull, and Rocky Balboa, have even been quite successful. An insider claims:

“The idea is Maverick is at the Top Gun school as an instructor — and this time it is he who has to deal with a cocky new female pilot.”

I hated the original film, and I hate Tom Cruise, so you can imagine my feelings on the matter. I can’t see Cruise going for it, but if he does, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hit, with his bankability as a box office profit-maker, and the many fans the original film still has to this day.
