Toby Jones Back for “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”

Toby Jones will do this again in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

Things have been kind of quiet on the Marvel movie front lately, but we do have a little bit of news today. In an interview with, Toby Jones said that he will be in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as Dr. Arnim Zola, the role he played in “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

Here is an excerpt from Marvel’s lengthy bio of Zola:

The frail, dwarfish Arnim Zola was born in 1930’s Switzerland where he became the world’s leading biochemist. In his ancestral castle, Zola happened upon mysterious papers brought by his ancestors in the Crusades. These documents originated from Deviants and contained secrets of genetic engineering that far surpassed even today’s level of technology. Zola used the secrets to become the world’s first public genetic engineer, perhaps preceded only by Nathaniel Essex, Mister Sinister.

Needing funds to continue his research, Zola presented his first invention, the creation of device that would transfer someone’s essence to a cloned body, to Adolf Hitler, who agreed to become his patron. This device and partnership allowed Hitler to survive World War II as the Hate-Monger. Zola also used it on himself, not only allowing him to survive into modern times but to also replace his normally frail body with a stronger, android one.

Okay, so if he was born in 1930s Switzerland, wouldn’t he have been about fourteen when the events of the first Captain America were taking place? Obviously this is a detail that the movie makers wouldn’t worry about (“Looks like an adult character to me, let’s get Toby Jones”), but is he presented as a kid genius in the comics? I’ll have to check this out.

Jones did the interview at the 2013 Critics Circle Awards, where he won best actor for “Berberian Sound Studio.” Jones will next be seen in “Serena” and is also filming a role in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Frank Grillo. Joe and Anthony Russo direct, and the release date is April 4, 2014.
