Tim Burton Talks ‘Alice in Wonderland’

Tim Burton’s re-imagining of Alice In Wonderland is now in production, and whether you’re a fan of the original Lewis Carroll story, Tim Burton himself, or even Johnny Depp (who isn’t a fan?) then you should be getting excited about this particular movie coming to the big screen.
But how is Burton approaching the film? And why do him and Depp seem to go hand in hand? Burton recently spoke to The LA Times from the set of Alice In Wonderland and had this to say on those matters and more.
“It’s a funny project. The story is obviously a classic with iconic images and ideas and thoughts. But with all the movie versions, well, I’ve just never seen one that really had any impact to me. It’s always just a series of weird events. Every character is strange and she’s just kind of wandering through all of the encounters as just a sort of observer.”
“The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of ‘Alice.’ And, you know, getting to do it in 3-D fits the material quite well. So I’m excited about making it a new version but also have the elements that people expect when they think of the material.”
“He [Depp] doesn’t like to be the same way twice. That’s good, it always keeps it fresh and all. And he likes the material we have here and he gets it. It’s nice to have people involved that are fans of the material and all.”
I think it’ll be fascinating to see how Burton keeps the story and visuals fresh while maintaining the feel of the original story. But I think the story suits his style anyway as Lewis Carroll’s book is a weird flight of fancy with dark characters to begin with - exactly what Burton is known for.
As for Depp, well, I’ve yet to see him mess a role up, or be in a terrible film. Which means he knows how to pick his projects and then makes sure they succeed with him at the helm. How he’ll cope with being the Mad Hatter is something I can’t wait to see.
