‘The X-Files 3’ Movie Still Possible

The X-Files 3

Let’s not kid ourselves here, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the second film of the monumentally important television series, was a dud. I haven’t seen the movie yet, which in itself shows why it failed to make much money at the box office, but everything I’ve heard about it suggests it was dire.

But, that doesn’t seem to have stopped the movie studios from talking about a third film, and when questioned by MovieWeb about the rumors, writer-producer Frank Spotnitz seemed to confirm it’s on the agenda. But this third movie, should it happen, will be the last throw of the dice. He said:

“Well, yeah. I think we’d all like to do it. The studio has not said yes or no. I think the box office, unfortunately, we got creamed in the theaters by The Dark Knight. I don’t think anybody could’ve anticipated that was going to be such a huge, historic phenomenon. To be a dark scary movie coming out the week after The Dark Knight was not the best timing. I think there’s life in the franchise still. I think these are great characters. There’s a date that looms very important in X-Files mythology, which is December 2012. I think after the DVD comes out, the studio will decide whether they want to roll the dice on another X-Files feature.”

“If we were to make one more feature, I think we would definitely have to deal with alien colonization. I honestly think that’s the movie that most non-hardcore X-Files fans, as well as a lot of hardcore X-Files fans are dying to see. Obviously, I think Chris has had ideas about that from the very beginning when he dreamt up this show, 16 years ago. It certainly would be designed to be the period on the sentence.”

I think The X-Files needs a final film to piece everything together and put a period on the sentence so I’m hoping DVD and Blu-ray sales of the second film make Fox want to make another one ready for 2012. Is it available to pre-order on Amazon yet?

  • I believe it comes out next week. The good thing is the film did well overseas pulling in like 60-70 million I believe world wide. Not as good a gross as the first movie, but I’m sure once dvd rentals and sales come back the film will probably come close to the 100 million mark. As for the film, it was pretty good as a standalone type of story. Very old school style thriller storytelling, that did fall flat in parts, but I think the final moments build a fair bit of suspense.

  • I agree with Dave Parrack ,there has to be a third X-FILES movie . As a fan of the show from the start in 1993 (in my opinion ) there are still a lot of loose ends concerning the alien ,2012 mythology of the series . Concerning the X-FILES i want to believe , as a stand alone i thought the movie was great .Now i’m not just saying that because i’m a fan but i thought the guys done great job of showing how these characters have evolved , and really this is what his movie is about , showing them as they are today . It was always going to be a double edged sword for Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz as almost every casual viewer on the planet associates the X-FILES with aliens . I truly believe that all involved should be given the chance to do the third movie and show the world once again that the X-FILES dosent have the reputation it has for nothing.

  • I thought X-Files: I Want To Believe was good. Being a huge fan of the television series from the start it was truly great to see Mulder and Scully once again! However, I have to admit there were certain elements about I Want To Believe that left me a little disappointed. I didn’t like that Mulder and Scully were not brought back into the Bureau as official agents (come on, that is how we have known them for so long), nor do I find Mulder and Scully in a romantic relationship to be favorable. I felt the ongoing question of whether or not they would become romantically involved kept a certain momentum going for the show. I honestly did not watch the series much after David Duchovny’s departure (Mulder Rules!), so I am unaware of when they technically became more involved. Perhaps it is nostalgia underlying that slight feeling of disappointment in the newest film. I do not think it was a bad movie. I think Chris Carter is genius, Gillian Anderson does an intense job in bringing Dana Scully to life, and David Duchovny is beyond amazing! I would be thrilled to see an X-Files 3 film.

  • More xfiles movies!!! Give this great show the ending it deserves!! Maybe a series following the children of mulder&scully!!!maybe a season 10?!!

  • Get with the program, X Files Three is a must! So let’s get it on
Alliens are going to invade the planet. Only Mulder & Sculy
can do anything about it.The way to destroy them is in their William’s hands. It’s going to be double barrelled bad so come\
on with it.The answer lies Scully & Mulder. So break it on down!

  • I’ve got some late breaking old news. Nobody cares about the x-files anymore. The show glory days are over. It’s becomes nothing more than a segment on vh1 I love the 90′s now. Lets face it the only people who wants a third movie are x-files fans only. The rest of the general audience couldn’t care less. Why would fox make a third film that only hardcore fans will see. Just because the movie has aliens, ufo’s,a conspiracy plotline, and the year 2012 doesn’t guarantee the movie will be a hit. The X-Files needs retooling in front and behind the camera. If fox does get around making a third film in a few years it will be a reboot. Sometimes the truth hurts.

  • Mostly I am commenting so that this thread doesn’t end on a pessimistic note. A lot of people still love the x-files, and are rooting for the third movie. I think it’ll happen!
