I could not have been more wrong months ago when I thought the last installment of the “Twilight” franchise would end respectably, but not brilliantly. I said, “Hey, the teen vampire moment has passed; everyone is so wrapped up in ‘Hunger Games’ fever that ‘Twilight’ is barely on the radar.” I felt like it would earn a solid amount of money, but mostly out of people returning to the films out of duty rather than because it was a cultural moment.
Again, I was sooooooo wrong. When advance sales for “Breaking Dawn Part 2″ began, it immediately became clear that there was still plenty of “Twilight” passion out there.Last night’s opening proved that again, with the film earning $30.4 million from Thursday night 10:00 pm and Friday midnight shows. That puts it on top of all the openings for the franchise.
Here’s how they stack up:
“Breaking Dawn Part 2″ – $30.4M
“Breaking Dawn Part 1″ – $30.25M
“Eclipse” – $30M
“New Moon” – $26.27M
The opening weekend record is held by “Breaking Dawn Part 1″ with $138.1 million. I’ve got to think that Part 2 is on track to pass that, even if it’s only by a little. Well, we’ll see how it looks Sunday. Then once the box office is all straightened out, we can begin to prepare for the remakes.
