The Rock, or Dwayne Johnson as he now prefers to be known, is set to star in a new live-action version of The Adventures of Jonny Quest. He will play Race Bannon, the bodyguard come special agent come pilot assigned to Jonny to protect him on his adventures.
The Rock confirmed he was set to be in the film in an interview with Moviehole. Andy Fickman, who Johnson has already worked with on The Race to Witch Mountain is set to direct. The role of Jonny Quest himself has yet to be cast but the studio is said to have someone in mind – Zac Efron from High School Musical.
The Rock said:
‘’ I love the script, I love working with Andy, I don’t know if you’ve read the latest [draft] but it’s awesome and it’s badass and I haven’t read, this is what I told everyone over at Warner Bros., and I love the studio too by the way, you know, I had my experience with them with Get Smart and they were great, I hadn’t read an action script like that in a LONG time. And that action was unbelievable. That will happen.’’
On the 17-year-old Efron playing the 12-year-old Quest, he said:
’I loved Jonny Quest when I was a kid. If you go a little older, it gives you more, it allows you to be…it just gives you a bit more, you know. But then you want to honor it too, so… “
This is a tricky one for me because I’ve never seen the original animated version of The Adventures of Jonny Quest. In fact, until I sat down to write this article, I didn’t even know such a show existed. However, not being a fan of old cartoon to movie adaptations in general, I’m not going to get too excited.
As for Efron playing Quest – I have no problem with it, even if it does mean the character will have to be rewritten in order to cater for the big difference in age. The thing is, would a 17 year-old need a bodyguard in the same way a 12-year-old would? The pair’s relationship may end up coming across as slightly homo-erotic, which I’m sure isn’t what studios want for a children’s film.
