The Longest Summer: Gordon-Levitt, Deschanel Get 500 Days

Oh no, Joseph Gordon-Levitt! You’ve signed up for a really boring sounding romantic comedy!
Are you excited about the prospect of Hollywood taking another stab at whimsical romantic comedy? Yeah, I know, me neither. Does it help if I say Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are starring? A little.
Variety reports that the two scene stealers (I mean this in a complimentary way–how many times have you read reviews of movies with Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt in supporting roles and found they get the best notices? A lot of times. I am answering my own questions quite well) are teaming up for 500 Days of Summer (look! it’s a global warminng comedy) about a man (that would be JG-L) who falls hopelessly in love with a woman (Miss ZD) who doesn’t believe in love (I hear you, sister).
Other cast members include Clark Gregg, Minka Kelly, Matthew Gray Gubler and Rachel Boston. Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber wrote the screenplay and Marc Webb is directing.
Wow, this sounds…really generic and bland. This better be a really great script, because it’s not the most captivating or original premise I’ve ever heard. One would like to think that talent such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt (I admit it–I’ve always been a huge fan. He’s a kid actor who really made the shift into adulthood without skipping a beat, and it shouldn’t be a surprise. I mean, he got to go to comedy school with John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson and Jane Curtin) and Zooey Deschanel (uhh…don’t know enough about her to spout off with such admiration as above, but I guess she’s quite fine) would make good choices. Right?
I tell you, sometimes I feel like the glory days of brilliant movie comedies are just too far away and never will come back. Excuse me while I go get my DVD of The Awful Truth.
