The Darkness may finally be about to be turned into a movie, with 24 Frames reporting that Walt Disney-affiliated Mandeville Films has penned a deal with Top Cow, the publisher of the comic book.
There have already been 115 The Darkness books, with 25 million copies sold worldwide, so there is a definite fanbase out there who will love the chance to see this ghoulish comic turned into a big-screen affair. There has also been a video game released, and a sequel is on its way. So that’s even more people who will have been exposed to the series.
For those who haven’t, however, The Darkness tells the tale of a mobster called Jackie Estacado who discovers he has a power in him that some would regard as a gift, others as an affliction. ‘The Darkness’, as it’s called, allows him to summon creatures from the underworld, but controlling them rather than letting them control him is a problem.
There have been previous attempts at getting this project off the ground but none have got far. Mandeville is reportedly hoping that the time is now ripe for a comic book movie of this kind thanks to Chris Nolan and The Dark Knight Rises taking the genre in a different direction. And I think they might be correct in their assumption.
