‘The Dark Knight’ Writer Unsure About Third Film

The Dark Knight is currently doing great business at the box office in the US, and in every other territory it has been released in. The film is huge, and not only is it making a huge amount of money, the critics have also loved it, with brilliant reviews coming in from all corners, and praise for all concerned.

So you’d think a third film in this current run of Batman films would be guaranteed, with the studio, and all the cast mad to give up the chance to once again see this much attention on their work. But, according to co-writer David Goyer, that’s the problem - The Dark Knight is just too big, and too good, and the chances of bettering it are remote.

According to Digital Spy, Goyer sees the prospect of writing another Batman movie “scary”. He also stated he would only get involved in another Batman project if he could be sure a sequel could top what has already been. He said:

“I think that’s the scariest thing - to think, could we come up with a third movie that was as good as the first two? Can we top ourselves? Doing it a third time would be a big proposition.”

“I do think, though, that if there’s not a third film - these two movies stand on their own. I think it could go either way.”

That’s not to say a third film hasn’t already been spoken about, with Goyer also revealing that a theme and villain for the film had already been discussed. He wouldn’t reveal any details on either of these though, so the speculation can continue.

I’ve yet to see The Dark Knight, as I’m in the UK, and it doesn’t open here until Thursday, but I expect to love it. And if I do, my hopes will be pinned on a third film to complete the Bale trilogy. All good things come in threes, don’t they? Or have I just combined two sayings for my own ends?
