“The Avengers 2″ Gets a Release Date

Just add a "2" and we're ready to go.

How far ahead are you making your moviegoing schedule? How about 2015? Yes, I thought so–you’ve just been waiting for someone to schedule something three years from now, and now someone has. Disney and Marvel have won the first one in award for the summer 2015 with the announcement today that “The Avengers 2″ will hit screens on May 1, 2015.

We recently heard that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct the sequel to this year’s megahit. The rest of the cast will no doubt include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner. Hopefully they’ll find a way to bring Tom Hiddleston along.

Here are the rest of the releases Marvel has scheduled over the next few years:

“Iron Man 3″ on May 3, 2013

“Thor: The Dark World” on November 8, 2013

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014

“Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014

It’s also possible that the long, long rumored “Ant-Man” will finally open during this time.

Since being released on May 4, “The Avengers” has earned $1.462 billion at the worldwide box office, putting it at number three on the all-time box office, behind “Titanic” and “Avatar.”
