The estate of Philip K. Dick has dropped its lawsuit against George Nolfi, who directed a movie version of The Adjustment Bureau that was released in 2011. But this may not be the end of the story.
The Adjustment Team is a story by Philip K. Dick. The Adjustment Bureau is a movie by George Nolfi. However, the Dick estate hasn’t seen a penny in movie royalties from the latter, a fact that prompted it to sue Nolfi at the end of last year.
According to Digital Spy, the Dick estate alleges Nolfi approached it in 2001 to secure the rights. A price of $25,000 per year was agreed. The movie then got made, at which point Nolfi learned the story was in the public domain. This means anyone can do whatever they want with it with no money changing hands.
Earlier this month a judge dismissed much of the case, and the Dick estate dropped the suit. However, it’s entirely possible the Dick estate will relaunch the lawsuit on a state level. And when there is money to be made lawsuits tend to hang around for a while. It helps that The Adjustment Bureau is a pretty good movie.
