Superman Returns Yet Again

Superman Returns Yet Again

There have been rumours of a sequel to Superman Returns, the rebooting of the series which was released in the same year, since October 2006. It now seems director Bryan Singer has finally confirmed that the project is under way, but only at a very early stage of development.

The first film was seen as a but of a flop, as despite a good cast, and a voracious public appetite for superhero films, it didn’t do as well at the box office as expected. But that hasn’t put Singer off, and in an interview with Empire, he even questioned the fact it was considered a failure:

“That movie made $400 million!”

“I don’t know what constitutes under-performing these days…Look, I can understand, I suppose, what some people mean. Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that. Especially bringing him back.”

“It really goes back to the fact that you can only please some of the people some of the time. But, yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel…with the intention of directing it.”

It looks like Singer has heard the complaints from the first time around though, and this sequel should be more action oriented with less reliance on storyline than the first.

I love superhero films but must admit Superman Returns was a little boring for my taste. With Transformers and Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzmann penning the screenplay this time around, hopefully it won’t be a case of deja vu.
