‘Superman’ Future In Doubt – Another Origin Movie Possible

I thought Superman Returns was a huge disappointment - it just didn’t grab me in the way either the original Superman movie did, or the current crop of other superhero films doing the rounds. Maybe we’re all just really spoilt when it comes to films based on comic book character, but regardless, the new Superman failed in my book.

And it’s a feeling which seems to be stalking the halls of Warner Brothers and DC Comics too as Dark Horizons reports that work on the sequel to Superman Returns has stalled due to a lack of direction. The problem seems to be that no-one knows whether to carry on where the last film ended or to start all over again.

In the same way that Batman Begins set the Batman franchise off in a completely new direction, or even how this year’s Incredible Hulk totally ignored Ang Lee’s version, Superman could be back with a brand new start.

Superman Returns just didn’t do well enough at the box office to incite confidence that a continuation of that storyline would be the right thing to do. So they may just start from the beginning again with a new origin movie.

At the moment there are no writers working on the film, and Bryan Singer isn’t even 100% to be involved. It depends if he agrees with the decision over the direction of the project. So the future of Superman is currently in doubt.
