Steve Carrell Gets Smart Again

The Get Smart remake was a love or hate thing: either you adored Steve Carrell’s take on the bumbling secret agent, or you thought the whole thing was a complete miss. I have to admit I am in the latter camp, but then maybe that’s because I think Carrell is overrated. He’s good in the American version of The Office, but Ricky Gervais is funnier.

So the announcement today that there is to be a Get Smart 2 will have pleased some people, while prompting shrugs in the rest of us. According to MTV Movies, Warner Bros. are committed to the sequel, and Carrell is definitely on board as part of a three year deal with the studio.

Anne Hathaway should be back as she seems keen on playing Agent 99 again, but the rest of the cast hasn’t signed up as of yet. No news yet either on a storyline or how the sequel will be any different than the first film.

As for the three year deal, it means Carrell will be producing as well as starring in films, and is looking to get everyone he’s ever worked with on board with him. So expect lots of cheesy, half-baked comedies with lots of one-liners but little in the way of plot. I can’t wait.
