Smith-Spielberg “Oldboy” Remake “Dead”

It seems you won’t get to see Steven Spielberg’s take on this scene from Oldboy.
When it was announced that Will Smith and Steven Spielberg were planning an English-language remake of the Korean film “Oldboy,” it was met with some chagrin. Why? Well, Park Chan-Wook’s film is probably best known for its ultra-violence and dark themes, two things we don’t usually associate with the often-family friendly Smith and Spielberg.
Now, though, if you were worried about a mega-budgeted PG version of “Oldboy,” you’re in luck. Latino Review (thanks to CHUD for the tip) says that producing studios Mandate and Dreamworks couldn’t come to an agreement and have scrapped the project.
Could it resurface somewhere else with another star and director? Possibly. But it seems safe to say that Spielberg and Smith, with all their other potential projects, are going to move on.

This is a good thing. Neither Spielberg nor Smith were capable of pulling this off.
