‘Sex and The City’ Writer Talks Sequel

Sex and The City

I think I must have something wrong with me. Even though I hate Sex and The City, and yes I admit, it IS an irrational hate, I can’t help writing about it whenever I get the chance. Maybe it’s a caveman-like urge in my genes to attack something, although the last time I checked, SATC isn’t a woolly mammoth I can club on the head and take home for tea.

We’ve already had one Sex and The City movie spin-off, and it now looks virtually guaranteed that we’ll suffer another one. Basically the first film made so much money from all those pre-menopausal women who still need to believe life hasn’t left them behind that a second is a shoe-in. Just an FYI – the same people also went to see Mamma Mia but at least that had Abba songs in it.

Michael Patrick King is the man (yes, I know, terrible isn’t it) behind Sex and The City, and the writer/director recently spoke to reporters at a WGA (Writers Guild of America) discussion in Los Angeles about how the sequel to SATC: The Movie could go.

According to Digital Spy he whined:

“In the last movie, I thought [the fans] wanted to see an epic and violently tragic love story, and drama, but I don’t think you go to that candy store twice. You can’t try to do what you did already, so you come up with a different tone that you like.”

“Women are very nice when they figure out who I am. And the only negative comment I ever got about the series was every now and then, some woman of colour – whether it’d be Latina or an African-American – they’d stop and say, ‘Where are the sisters?’ in my ear, and I was like, ‘Yeah, where are they?’”

Sex and The City 2 not an epic love story? What the hell? Surely that is the very essence of the series and a 90 minute film seems made for that type of storyline. I can only imagine King is imagining the next one to have lots of fun, no-holds barred sex instead. So maybe I should go and see it after all. But hang on, it’ll be horse-face (SJP) herself having sex won’t it? In that case, I’ll pass once again.
