Kate Winslet, nominaton hog.
The Screen Actors Guild announced today the nominations for their annual awards. So yes, it’s actors voting on other actors’ performances. It’s that simple. I guess because of that, even if there is a strike, the awards ceremony, scheduled for January 25th, will go on. If there is a strike, then the awards will probably be used to some degree to explain to the viewing audience…if there is one…why they’re on strike. Good luck.
(And let’s not even get into the fighting that’s going on in the guild between various factions about the possibility. It’s star vs. star, and getting very ugly. Okay, considering that the various sides feature people who regularly grace magazine covers, not that ugly, but you know what I mean.)
Doubt was the big collector of nominations, with a nod for best ensemble as well as individual nominations for just about every cast member (it is a pretty small cast). This is a surprise mostly because the movie hasn’t been particularly well-reviewed, and casts from other movies have drawn more praise in the rush of critics lists and annual awards. So we’ll see if all this attention actually results in anything.
In the curiosity category, Kate Winslet is doing the covering all bases thing with nominations for supporting actress in The Reader and actress for Revolutionary Road. I don’t think it looks good for either category, but I also went 0-14 in one of my fantasy football leagues so I’m not necessarily a good predictor of talent or performance.
And here are the noms for film:
