I never thought I’d see the day but oh yes, Drop Dead Fred is getting a remake. I’m in that tiny minority of people who actually like the original movie. Maybe it’s because I was 14 at the time of release and it suited my sense of humor, or maybe it’s because I’m a big fan of Rik Mayall, the man who plays Phoebe Cates’s imaginary friend. It could just be that I have bad taste.
I’m not usually a fan of Hollywood remakes, especially of films as recent as this. However, this is one movie that should have been received better and, let’s face it, deserved better direction and casting than it received. So maybe the remake will right all those wrongs.
Russell Brand has been cast as Fred, the imaginary best friend of the lead character. I love Brand and I think this role will suit him down to the ground. His performance is likely to be less animated and wacky than Mayall’s was but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
According to Empire, this new version of Drop Dead Fred will follow a different path than the original. It’ll build on the idea of imaginary friends and try to be a Beetlejuice for the modern era. Which sounds both intriguing and exciting to my easily-pleased taste buds.
Dennis McNicholas is writing the script, while Marc Platt is producing for Universal. With Brand already in that just leaves the Cates character and a director to be found. Will they be able to pull a Drop Dead Fred remake off? My imaginary friend Bob thinks so.
Me and my sister used to love this film too when we were younger! A re-make with Russel Brand should be quite good! He is brilliant!

I’m still on the fence on this one. On one hand, it could enlighten people to see the original, which is awesome because this movie is AMAZING!!!
But on the other hand… it just wont be… FRED! you know? It could just suck and then people will hate it and I’ll have to go ball cutting! lol
oh! and I gave my copy of Drop Dead Fred to my brother and never got it back, can anyone tell me where I could get another one because I’ve looked all over and nothing!!!!
Ressell Brand. Is he the one married to Katy Perry? If so, then I will not be seeing the remake. Fred just wont be Fred.
6 months married to R.B. and Perry is already in counseling. I like comedies so funny I end up wetting myself and I like horror movies so scary I end up wetting myself. That being the case, my wife wont let me go to the movies as often as I would like. Drive-ins used to be OK. But are almost all gone by now.
Cosmo Kramer would make a good Fred.
hay that movie can be found at a 2 hand store more then likely and i loved the movie its actroly has a meaning that we all adults need to know not everybody is a true friend and they can go drop dead and stop trying to help themself
