Rupert Sanders Up for “Van Helsing”

By Kirsten Anderson Movie News

Goodness, it's hard to find a picture of Rupert Sanders without Kristen Stewart.

We have news from Twitch that Rupert Sanders may take the directing job for “Van Helsing.” Tom Cruise is attached to star as the vampire hunter of the title. In the original “Dracula,” the character is a Dutch doctor. Please don’t let Cruise do a Dutch accent. Or any kind of accent.

Anyway, Sanders is best known for a) having an affair with his much younger leading lady Kristen Stewart on the set of “Snow White and the Huntsman” and b) directing “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Universal pictures, which is making “Van Helsing,” also made “Snow White,” which was a solid, if not spectacular hit. It did well enough to generate a sequel, though, so Universal has been stuck with a bad decision: let Sanders direct the sequel, because he did a good enough job with the original but then deal with a storm of bad publicity as he and Stewart are put back together, or worse, keep Sanders and write Stewart out (the sequel has long been rumored to focus on Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman character). “Van Helsing” could be a good out for the studio–it keeps a director they like on board, but also gives them a plausible reason to keep him away from the “Snow White” sequel.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci wrote the “Van Helsing” script. There’s no release date yet.
