Ruffalo to Make Delicious Directing Debut

Mark Ruffalo

Newbie director Mark Ruffalo hopes that plenty of free water will keep everyone on the set happy.

There comes a time when many actors begin to get tired of being pushed around. They watch a director and think, “Huh, I could do that.” So they try and some turn out to be quite good at it (Clint Eastwood); others…not so good (Steven Seagal, anyone?).

Now Mark Ruffalo, darling of stage and film critics is taking his turn at helming his very own motion picture–his very own as in also starring in it, along with James Franco, and Chris Thornton, who also wrote the script (presumably James Franco is handling the catering–no “just acting” on this film!). Said script is called Sympathy for Delicious. I’ll let Variety describe it because I don’t think I can do it justice:

Thornton, who wrote the script, plays “Delicious” Dean O’Dwyer, a paralyzed DJ struggling to survive in his wheelchair on the streets of L.A. He turns to faith-healing and mysteriously acquires the ability to cure the sick — although not himself. Ruffalo plays a Jesuit priest who tries to help him come to terms with the limits of his gift, and Franco a rock singer in a band that exploits the suddenly famous healer.

I have to say, looking at that….I’m not very excited about it. There’s a little bit of Tommy in that description, isn’t there? But I am an optimistic sort, and you know what? Sometimes things don’t play well on the page, but once you put in some good actors and an experienced enthusiastic director, everything turns out all right. I like Ruffalo and Franco, so…good luck, kids.
