“RoboCop” Details Are Out and About

By Kirsten Anderson Movie News

Fears about the "RoboCop" remake strike the Internet...where fear often strikes.

How’s this for a relay of passed on info? Indiewire tells how Drew McWeeny at HitFix read the script for the “RoboCop” remake and posted his comments on Twitter as he read. Let’s just say the reaction isn’t good (“Good god… it just keeps topping itself. It’s like someone wrote a script scientifically fine-tuned to destroy me.”).

However, we would like to note that the movie does have a good director, Jose Padilha, and an interesting cast–Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Abbie Cornish, Hugh Laurie, Jennifer Ehle and Michael K. Williams–so there must be something there, right? We hope.

Anyway, some details can be gleaned from McWeeny’s reaction, which are pulled together at Bleeding Cool. The most notable (to me at least) was that the original suit does make an appearance, but in a comic bit:

Yea, audiences will see Alex Murphy in the original metal outfit, but when it’s taken to a focus group of criminals, they laugh saying, “He looks like a toy from the ’80s!”  Anway, the suit is upgraded with 2.0 being outsourced to China (ha ha), and progress continues with 3.0 being built, and then deployed “onto an Al Queda training camp to see what he does.” And that’s not all, as we’ll see a sequence with the ED-209s being used in Iran to stop suicide bombers.

So it looks like we have a shaky start here–a script that’s heavily criticized by one person, albeit one person who usually does a pretty good job in writing about movies, but also a solid cast and director. Well, we have a whole year to wait to find out: “RoboCop” will be released on August 9, 2013.
