Rihanna Looking at Bodyguard…Remake

In 1992, Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner were just a couple of crazy kids with their stars on the rise.
This is from the gossip pages, so take that for whatever meaning you will (likely “caution”).
Today’s New York Daily News’ Gatecrasher column reports that singer Rihanna has been in the city meeting with film execs to talk about potential projects, as she’s anxious to get a movie career started. Of course, her reps deny any such meetings took place, but then again, these are probably the same reps who initially said she got all of her bruises and injuries by walking into a car door or something.
The main project she is supposedly looking at is a remake of “The Bodyguard,” the 1992 movie that starred Whitney Houston as a pop singer who falls in love with her bodyguard, played by Kevin Costner. The movie itself is pretty slight, and didn’t exactly set Houston on a path to Oscar (something Rihanna should note); it’s best known today for its theme song, the seemingly endless “I Will Always Love You.”
However, if someone like Rihanna, a young singer, is looking to break into movies, it would be a good choice. Like I said, it’s not a great movie so remaking it wouldn’t exactly be the defacement of a national treasure. She would basically play a character just like herself, and if they find a strong leading man, he can carry the movie. Okay, the rumor is that Channing Tatum would carry the movie–he doesn’t strike me as much more than an empty-headed stud, but at least he has something of a track record. Though it still would be smarter to go with someone with more acting cred. Rihanna is pretty, but I don’t know if she has the presence for the big screen, to be honest. No harm in trying, though.
