Recurring Nightmare: Elm Street Remake Set to Go

Who can fill Robert Englund’s shoes…or hat…or nails?
ShockTillYouDrop reports that Platinum Dunes, Warner Brothers and New Line (now a part of WB) are set to work together on the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street. Although the remake has been long talked about, there wasn’t until now an assurance that Platinum Dunes, the studio behind the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the upcoming Friday the 13th, would be involved.
Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller promises something new, not just a plain remake:
“It’s like what we’re doing to Friday the 13th,” says Fuller. “It’s not Freddy cracking jokes. We want to make a horrifying movie. The concept is so scary, don’t fall asleep or you’ll die. This guy gets you when you’re most vulnerable, in your sleep. We love that. That’s the basis of the movie. It’ll be most similar to the first one but in terms of kills and dreams we’ll borrow from the entire series.”
Fuller also said that the positive reception so far to screenings of their Friday the 13th reboot helped seal the deal.
Wesley Strick is rewriting the script and shooting will take place in the Chicago suburbs. Now the real question is casting–who will step into the iconic role of Freddy Krueger? The commenters on the ShockTillYouDrop post throw out a range of suggestions, from the “not a chance” (Johnny Depp–come on, not unless Tim Burton’s directing), to the “swear it’s a done deal” (Billy Bob Thornton), to the quite plausible (Robert Patrick–makes sense). I’m voting for Zac Efron.
