Jessica Rabbit, 2D pinup girl.
The MTV Movies Blog recently talked to director Robert Zemeckis and one of the topics he brought up was the possibility of doing a sequel to “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” Here’s his own words:
“I’ll tell you what is buzzing around in my head now that we have the ability—the digital tools, performance capture—I’m starting to think about ‘Roger Rabbit.’”
The 1988 film was groundbreaking for its mix of cartoon characters and live action in an adult-oriented film noir. Zemeckis, always a technology leader, has since moved on to working almost excusively in motion capture, with films such as ”The Polar Express” and the upcoming Jim Carrey “A Christmas Carol.”
So with that in mind, I wonder if he would even have live actors at all in a sequel–not to imply, by the way, that there is any kind of solid evidence that this thing will happen. Zemeckis hasn’t done a pure live action, traditional film since “Castaway” in 2000. Is he just so over working in live action that another “Roger Rabbit” would be all motion capture and CGI?
Of course, that would defeat the purpose of the original ”Roger Rabbit,” which cleverly satirized a Hollywood caste system where animated characters have lives off the animation cell and are treated like B movie actors. If everyone’s animated, then the thrill of the clash between two worlds isn’t really there, is it? It’s all something to think about. I always liked the concept of “Roger Rabbit” more than the actual movie, but I’d be glad to hear about another if Zemeckis is into it. I wouldn’t put it past him to have another clever idea up his motion captured sleeve.
