But don’t worry, as that doesn’t mean the new Spock won’t be in the next film. But until that start shooting, Quinto wants to give the whole Star Trek universe a wide berth, preferring to use his new found movie fame to explore other avenues.
I love the new Star Trek. I was always bound to, as I consider J.J. Abrams a genius, but it even managed to exceed my expectations. The best thing in it is Zachary Quinto as Spock, who manages to act everyone else (including Leonard Nimoy) off the screen.
However, it looked for a few hours as though Quinto was walking away from the franchise. During press for the video game, Star Trek Online, which Quinto voice-acted for, the actor told MTV Movies:
“I’m stepping away from ‘Star Trek’ for at least two years — no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while. I want to invite [my fans] along with me on my journey, which is going to take them out of their comfort zone and into other areas and other styles of storytelling.”
This led to concerns he was out of the sequel. But no, he’s not. And he was quick to appease fans’ concerns on his official blog, stating:
“Obviously I will be a part of any upcoming films… reprising my role as Spock. What i meant was that in the meantime i won’t be making any public appearances related to the franchise – or doing any more auxiliary projects pertaining to the Trek universe. I will be focusing my efforts on other projects and preparing to shoot the next film – which will be released in June of 2012… two years from now. Hence the no Trek for two years remark. worry not trekkers. It was a misunderstanding of context. I am not Spock. But i am Spock. All at the same time.”
Phew, that’s OK then. I don’t blame Quinto for wanting to head in other directions rather than focus fully on Star Trek. As any of the actors who have appeared in the TV shows or movies will no doubt confirm, it’s very easy to get stuck in a Trek rut. But Quinto is too good and versatile an actor to let that fate befall him.
