Pride and Glory Escapes New Line Oblivion, Gets Release Date

Don’t worry, Colin, someday our movie will get out.

When New Line Pictures was absorbed into Warner Brothers earlier this year, it meant little to most of us. Oh yeah, some of us might have thought vaguely about seeing the New Line logo on movies they’d liked. Some of the kindlier amongst us might have given a passing sympathetic thought to New Line employees who lost their jobs. People in the industry who’d had relationships at New Line that were potentially going to get their movies made probably shrugged, sighed, and got ready to start over somewhere else.

Some, though, were caught in the middle. Like Gavin O’Connor and his movie Pride and Glory. The movie was done, but a few weeks before New Line disappeared, the March release date for the cop drama was suddenly scrapped. When WB took over, it seemed like the movie was doomed to float around in limbo, as no one at WB had any real investment in it. The director and stars Colin Farrell and Edward Norton went public to try to get something happening, but it seemed like this one was about to die a quiet straight to DVD death.

Au contraire, my cop drama Farrell/Norton loving friends! Variety reports that all is not lost–Warners has shown some life and after the film does a stint at the Toronto Film Festival, it will open nationwide in 2200 theaters on October 24th.

I remember when this was filming and it seems like about forever and a half ago. In addition to Norton and Farrell, it also stars Jon Voight, Noah Emmerich, and stage actress Jennifer Ehle. The story is one of those multi-generational cop family sagas where one family member discovers another is involved in a corruption scandal and moral dilemmas ensue.

Now after all this angst about getting the movie out to audiences, here’s a tip: it better be good. No, let me rephrase that. I hope it’s good. I really do. I like Norton and Farrell (well, Norton more than Farrell, but one of my friends met Farrell at an event and said he couldn’t have been nicer, so I’ll give him points for that) and both could use a hit. Norton had the Hulk issues this year and Farrell was in the lovely but no one saw it In Bruges (hey, if you haven’t seen it, find it). These are two of our better actors and they shouldn’t have to languish in nowheresland.
